è il secondo album della strepitosa carriera della giovane Mariah, esce nel
Settembre del 1991 a pochissima distanza dal primo. Anche in questo album
ci sono produttori famosi, l’ormai noto autore W. Afanasieff, e l’inedito
duo di dj della C+C Music Factory, ovvero David Cole e Robert Clivillés che
promettono di portare un po’ del suono della strada nella nuova opera di Mariah.
Un’altra grande collaborazione, è quella con Carole King, cantautrice idolo
di Mariah, famosa soprattutto per il suo capolavoro “Tapestry” album ancora
molto venduto. L’album è ricco di canzoni che diventeranno dei veri e propri
classici per tutti i fans come la stupenda “Make It Happen” e l’altrettanto
famosa “Emotions” che si consacra come il 5° #1 di Mariah e la farà entrare
di diritto nella storia della musica per aver battuto il record dei Jackson
5 che avevano ottenuto 4 #1 di seguito, ma Mariah riscrisse la storia. Ai
“profani” quegli “strani suoni” nelle canzoni potranno sembrare fischi, ma
in realtà sono gli incredibili acuti della voce più bella del mondo, pensate
che un “semplice mortale” è fortunato se ha un’estensione vocale di una o
al massimo due ottave, ma il nostro idolo arriva addirittura a cinque coprendo
l’estensione di un pianoforte in piena regola! L’ultima canzone dell’album
è molto triste, scritta per un amico morto in un incidente, nella canzone,
basata su un brano jazz, Mariah ci mostra un’altra meraviglia della sua voce,
che qui appare diversa, più profonda rispetto alle canzoni precedenti.
Curiosità: l’album originariamente doveva essere intitolato proprio
“The Wind” come l’ultima track, poi optarono per “Emotions” che diventò la
title-track.
