Info: L’album esce nell’Ottobre del 1995, il
sesto per Mariah. Un bellissimo “sogno ad occhi aperti”, dodici canzoni una
più bella dell’altra, in questo album si avverte che la farfalla si prepara
ad aprire le ali e volare via, diventando più indipendente nelle scelte artistiche.
Le sonorità sono leggermente diverse e fioccano le collaborazioni prestigiose,
Dave “Jam” Hall, già produttore di “Dreamlover”, i Boyz II Men per la stupenda
“One Sweet Day”, il solito W. Afanasieff, e per la prima volta Jermaine Dupri
che diventerà un collaboratore fisso nonché amico, per “Always Be My Baby”
e “Long Ago”, canzone veramente stupenda dall’atmosfera spiccatamente R&B.
Altro capolavoro è la collaborazione con Babyface per “Melt Away”, canzone
in cui Mariah dimostra di poter cantare anche le note più basse, e quasi è
difficile riconoscere la sua voce nella prima parte della canzone. Tra le
altre canzoni, “Underneath The Stars” dall’atmosfera sognante, e ballate romantiche
come la cover di “Open Arms” dei Journey, e le bellissime “I Am Free” e “When
I Saw You”. Per “Forever” Mariah sceglie un’atmosfera un po’ anni ’60; mentre
l’ultimo brano è una bellissima ballata autobiografica, che forse può essere
vista come “antenata” di “Can’t Take That Away” e “Petals”, splendide ballate
di Rainbow. Da ricordare la famosa collaborazione con Sean “Puffy” Combs,
allora un promettente produttore che aspettava il “big break” anche come rapper,
per Fantasy e i famosi remixes a cui partecipa Old Dirty Bastard, dei Wu-Tang
Clan. L’album è forse uno dei più “successful” per Mariah, conquista il #1
sia in USA che in UK dove debutta direttamente, altrettanto successo hanno
i singoli, Fantasy che debutta direttamente al #1 sia della chart R&B che
quella pop, alla cui vetta rimarrà per 8 settimane. Spettacolare è però il
successo di “One Sweet Day”: debutta al #1 delle chart USA e vi rimane per
16 settimane consecutive battendo ogni record di permanenza in vetta, inoltre
è il 2° singolo più venduto e popolare del 1996 in USA. Il 3° singolo, “Always
Be My Baby” non è da meno, debutta al #2 ma conquista la vetta dove rimane
per due settimane finchè non lo spodesteranno i Bone Thugs ‘N Harmony con
la bellissima “Crossroads”, collaborazione in vista… Il 4° singolo, “Forever”,
è meno fortunato forse per colpa dell’airplay, sebbene ora può capitare di
sentirlo su qualche radio country americana! Un altro singolo estratto è "Underneath
The Stars" di cui esistono anche alcuni remixes inediti. Daydream si conquista
un posticino anche nella classifica italiana, mentre Fantasy debutta al #9
per poi scivolare verso il basso, sigh! =( Tuttavia Daydream rimane uno degli
albums di maggior successo, avendo piazzato 3 singoli al #1, e rimanendo al
#1 della albums chart americana, per svariate settimane a fasi alterne, tra
discese e salite.
Curiosità : per questo album Mariah diventa anche regista di video,
dirigendo il video per il primo singolo, Fantasy, nel video Mariah è nel suo
habitat naturale, in un certo senso, un Luna Park! Lei adora i parchi di divertimento,
e soprattutto le “Montagne Russe”!!! E’ regista anche del 3° video, quello
di “Always Be My Baby”, ambientato nella “natura” intorno ad uno dei campi
del Fresh Air Fund, associazione che Mariah supporta.
