Mariah ha lavorato per più di due anni alla realizzazione di questo disco e come al solito non solo è l'autrice di tutti i testi ma se lo è anche prodotto. A proposito del titolo "The Emancipation Of Mimi" Mariah ha detto: "Mimi è un soprannome molto molto personale che usano soltanto le persone davvero vicine a me...una di quelle piccole cose che ho sempre tenuto per me,giusto per porre una linea di demarcazione tra me come persona privata e personaggio pubblico. Intitolando l'album The Emancipation of Mimi sto abbassando la guardia e sto invitando i miei fans ad essere ancora più vicini a me...Cosa ancora più importante,sto celebrando il fatto di essere cresciuta dentro come persona e come artista e non voglio più sentirmi condizionata dalle mie insicurezze o dover essere obbligata a vivere come la visione di "Mariah Carey" di qualcun altro. Adesso posso finalmente dire "Questa sono io,questa è la vera Mariah, prendere o lasciare"Per la prima volta nelle mia vita mi sento libera e non ho paura di essere come davvero sono .
